OG YOGA INSTRUCTORS > CHRIS OSHIMA

Chris Oshima

I got a black belt in Aikido in Japan and taught it in the USA in my 20’s. Over the years I trained in other forms of Martial Arts (Wing Chun, JKD, and Tai Chi). As for Yoga, I practiced Ashtanga yoga when I was younger. I moved to San Diego in 2021, and attended a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training at Riffs, and finally met JoAnn Jaffe in the 30-hour trauma-informed Yoga. I am excited for an opportunity to help people with a grieving heart through Yoga, Martial Arts, and Meditation. Received a Ph.D. from the University of Florida, and currently an Emeritus Professor of Educational Research at Georgia State University.

Words I live by…

Shanti, Shanti, Shanti (Peace, Peace, Peace)

What inspires me…

Powerful prana from all living things (humans, animals, plants, etc.)

Outside of the studio…

You can find me walking my dog (Shanti) in many beautiful places in San Diego such as Fiesta Island. I love to exercise (yoga, weight training, pickleball, etc.). At home, I am in front of the computer teaching statistics classes online to graduate students in Georgia.

About my class called Yoga for a Healing Heart…

This class is a place where people with grieving heart can come together and feel you are not alone. You may have lost your special person due to death, divorce, break-up, etc. The class starts with visualization, meditation, and breath work. Then, move on to gentle yoga poses based on “Overcoming Trauma through Yoga” by Emerson and Hopper. The class ends with metta meditation where loving kindness will be spread inside and outside you. A touch of Tai Chi where your breathing and movement are synched may be employed time to time. All levels are welcome. You will not be asked to discuss your broken heart. We will all understand that you are in the class to heal your heart.
